From now on, Radhika:

Sky Diving for the First Time? My Experience in Italy

Italy for me was just not another European travel destination, but I will always remember this place for my first adventure in sky diving. Sky diving is not for faint heart and whenever I used to look up at the sky, I always used to wonder what it feels like to see the world down below you, while flying mid air. Sky diving is one of the craziest and thrilling experiences one can experience in their life. It is like taking a leap of faith mid air.

A Brief

I did sky diving in Nettuno, Italy, which is a small town near Rome, about two hours away. The name of the company is Crazy Fly Nettuno and people working here are highly trained professionals who are sky diving for years now. They only operate during the holidays or weekends, which was perfect for me as I was visiting Rome during the weekend itself. If you want to experience this, you can visit their website to know all the details of their cost and timings.

Why Nettuno?

Sky Diving in Italy is not very prominent. When people think of Italy, they do not think of sky diving. I chose Nettuno for several reasons. The first and foremost is that it is very close to Rome, giving me room to go back and forth to one of its major cities when I am done with the adventure. But apart from this, Nettuno was perfect as it provided the best views of both the city as well as the ocean. In one go you can enjoy both of them. Although you cannot see Rome from here, but the view of Nettuno is equally breathtaking.

It was such a surreal feeling to be in the mid air and feel like you are flying close to the ocean. I had butterflies in my stomach and I was high on adrenaline. Plus, the team is very professional and legitimate. They know what they are doing. I felt extremely safe while flying.

Sky Diving Waiver

I was not really nervous when I arrived at the base, however, the professionals working here have a way to put you at ease. The day started with signing all the formalities and making payments. The first thing you do is sign a waiver where in you are basically signing your life away. You waive the tandem of any harm or liabilities that occur to you during the jump (injury or death).

Sky Diving Lesson

As a tandem jump, you have nothing much to do but just sit back, listen to your tandem and enjoy the jump. However, they still tell you the basics which revolves around how you have to position yourself while jumping. They tell you how you need to cross your arms, bend your head backward with knees bent while jumping. But one of the most essential parts is to keep your knees bent during the landing process, otherwise, you would get hurt.

The Diving Process

Later, they give you your costume and buckle you up. At this time, to be honest, I started to freak out. And all you can do is try to think anything else but this to divert your mind. All the instructors gather around the plane, cheer you up and off you go to your flying site. Although I was finding the view mesmerizing from the top, looking at the height and how far I have to fly to land was brain-numbing.

At first, the solo divers jump which is surreal and towards the end of it when no one is in the place it is time for you to jump. You are sitting right next to the plane door against your tandem’s chest and that is when he says “bend your knees and do not forget to smile for your camera”. And then he screams “1,2 and now”. And off you are; the gravity pulling you towards the Earth at a speed of 200 mph. It is so fast and sudden that you are just squealing with excitement at the rush of adrenaline. The feeling is just incredible! You do not feel as if you are falling, it actually feels like you are in some roller coaster.

Further, we had another skydiver who jumped moments before us to capture our tandem jump. He held hands with my instructor during the jump so that my reactions and every moment can be recorded! It was surreal.

After 60 seconds of free fall, the parachute opened up and well that is when you realize that you actually aced the jump. You are alive! You had the best 60 seconds of your life! And you cherish the surroundings and how beautiful Earth looks from above. In fact, the instructor spun the parachute as well in a zig-zag fashion which was even more thrilling.

Tandem Certification

I felt so happy. It felt like I was at the top of the world as soon as I landed. We gave each other a high five as soon as we landed and everyone had broad smiles on their faces seeing how happy I felt.

I returned my gears, saw the tandem video, received my pictures and later got my first ever Tandem certificate. And well, that was the day I promised myself that I would get certified as a skydiver! The feeling is amazing and jumping once will never be enough. I will always recommend everyone to go for it; the feeling is out of this world.
