Pictures of Rotterdam, I would like to share mine! It isn’t going to be solely about Rotterdam but also will touch Gauda and Dordrecht. These are small cities and are perfect for a day trip. So if you are considering making it to the Netherlands – scroll through this post and dive into its atmosphere.
I do find Rotterdam and surroundings special. Since my post, where I summarized tourism in Finland in 20 pictures, did very well, I kept the same format. Here are my 20 pictures of Rotterdam together with 5 reasons to visit.
1. Modern Architecture
Let’s start with the nice obvious one! Rotterdam is known for its cutting-edge modern architecture, which makes it significantly different from Amsterdam or other major cities. During the war, the city was almost gone. It was re-designed from scratch, which includes some wild architectural experiments right in the center of the city. Those can be easily walked through in you have one day in Rotterdam.
Let’s take a look at the highlights.
The Market Hall is my second favorite. How many cool modern markets you know? I think the most notable markets in the world are old and traditional. But this one is different. Opened in 2014 it is one of the top attractions in Rotterdam.
Arhitecture is probably the most significant of tourist attractions of Rotterdam. But more intersting things are a half an hour away from the city.
2. Gouda Cheese
Gouda cheese is famous, but fun fact is that it is not produced in Gouda. I have talked to some locals there, and they told that actual production is in smaller towns around Gouda, inside the city – they only have the cheese market.
They also added, that most of that cheese is done somewhere in Poland and that is the one they buy because it is cheaper. Cheese that is actually made in the Netherlands, as I was told, is only for tourists.
Touristy thing… you know what? I don’t care! There are hundreds of sorts, which you cannot find anywhere else. Some have really weird colors and interesting, unusual tastes. I loved it and ended up bringing a half-year supply to my home.
3. Traditional Dutch houses (and other old architecture)
Traditional Dutch houses, they are normally slim, high and deep. I think you can just go around and picture them standing in line. As someone, who does travel photography, you look for some sort of a pattern, and they do make beautiful patterns. Hope to shoot enough to make a whole post.
And it is not like there is a small district of those, that they present to tourists. These districts are endless in Gouda and Dordrecht.
4. Maritime culture
If you travel to Rotterdam, you may skip one thing, it has a gigantic port, one of the largest in Europe. Inside the cities (Rotterdam, Gouda, Dordrecht) there is a smart series of canals, with many ships, docked right in the city. In Gouda, there is a whole bunch of steamships from around 1900, gathered in one place, and people live in these ships. If you love the maritime culture, could you wish for a better place?
5. Small details
In both, classic Gouda or modern Rotterdam, there are some small details, that add up to authenticity.
