On the Restaurant Day, people go outside, put up their tents, cook and sell food. Some are simply opening their windows or even flats and offer their food without leaving homes. That is the time when you can try tasty things from all over the world. I would like to bring you the restaurant day in pictures!

The simple idea of Restaurant Days came from Finland and got popularity worldwide. It is organized four times a year. So far, the restaurant day came to 79 countries, here are some statistics from:

• 15 February 2015: 1375 restaurants in 34 countries
• 16 May 2015: 2497 restaurants in 34 countries
• 16 August 2015: 2042 restaurants in 29 countries
• 21 November 2015: 1627 restaurants in 32 countries
• 21 February 2016: 1245 restaurants in 29 countries

Restaurant day came from Finland

The Restaurant Day celebration is originated from Finland. The idea came out of the disappointment with the bureaucracy in the restaurant business. From 2011, everyone could sell their food 4 times a year. In May 2016, the Restaurant Day has changed. Instead of waiting for a special day – you could set the restaurant any day. We are missing statistics from that time. It this didn’t seem to work as organizers wanted, so from 2017 we are back to four times a year.

Restaurant Day in Helsinki

During the Restaurant Days in summer, it is difficult to believe that you are in Finland. Normally the half-empty streets are full of life. The picture shows the heart of Helsinki – Esplanadi, most of the restaurants are placed along this walking street.

Most of the restaurants are set along Esplanadi. While you will have the biggest selection there, you shouldn’t limit yourself to this street. Take a walk away from the city center and keep your eyes open. Some interesting places are away from the noisy areas, and unlike the city center, there can be a place to sit and relax. I think Restaurant day in winter does not get enough attention. I know that bad weather keeps people at their homes. But in my opinion, meeting happy people is the best way to overcome the darkness an cold.

I think, I meet almost all my expat friends, who are good in cooking. They tell they make a good bunch of money. I know that many of my readers didn’t come from Finland and I highly recommend giving a restaurant day a try. Both as a visitor and as a restaurant owner.
